Marcia Gay Harden on her gay son: I just want to make sure he can have a family

I’ve always admired Marcia Gay Harden as an actress, even though she chose to appear in the Fifty Shades movies. The 58-year-old, who won an Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in 2000’s Pollock, isn’t only an exceptional actress, she’s an exceptional mom to boot.

Marcia and her ex-husband, Thaddaeus Scheel, are also parents to three kids, 13-year-old twins Hudson and Julitta, and 19-year-old daughter Eulala. Hudson is gay, and, much like Sally Field, Marcia supports her son 100%. She recently took him to the Family Equality Council’s annual Impact Awards, held at L.A.’s Globe Theater. The event, which pays tribute to LBGTQ families and those who have fought for equality ,was also attended by Armie Hammer, Beau Bridges, Lance Bass and Queer Eye’s Karamo Brown. Marcia shared a photo with Hudson on Instagram and told US Magazine that “The cause is dear to me, yes. My son is gay. I just want to make sure he gets to have a family when he wants one.”

Hudson is a cute kid, and a pretty skilled makeup artist. His Instagram feed features some of his most gorgeous looks, including a tribute to RuPaul’s Drag Race All-Stars 3 champion, Trixie Mattel. O.M.G.

Marcia has been an outspoken supporter and ally for LBGTQ causes for years. Back in October, she tweeted a photo with cast of her CBS series Code Black wearing purple for GLAAD’s annual Spirit Day.

The actress also has some sage advice for her fellow parents. In another Instagram post from the Impact Awards, Marcia posed with actor David Marshall Grant, who co-starred with her in the original Broadway production of Angels in America. In the accompanying caption, she advised, “just b good parents. Its not your gender or sexual preference that make u a good parent.” She added that accepting differences is the sign of “good parenting.” Can I get an “Amen”? What a great mom. Brava, Marcia.
